The Asheville Marketplace was a mid semester project given to my design studio during the Fall Semester of my Junior Year. It was meant as a charrette to get us to start thinking about our Final Semester project. The brief detailed that we were meant to create an open & public Marketplace, in Downtown Asheville, that could attract the diverse cultures in Asheville and be enjoyable to all.
My goal was to communicate the idea of entering a different place and create a threshold condition within the market place. I initially decided on going with a campus structure for my marketplace. But then I realized that the site lacked placement so I took inspiration from the I-240 Highway located close to the site and used that to influence my design. In between the buildings, I created “highways” that had extruded columns underneath that would be used to showcase artwork and also create open space covered space on the site.
